Heather put together these logo designs for our business to give us more of a identity.

The logo we felt best represented our business.

Unique promotional offer.

From looking at our competitors we found that there was no other company that offered a package deal for an affordable price. We felt this was our opportunity to target our audience with this package deal for new bands starting up.

This started pack will include 50 CDs, 50 A2 posters, 100 vinyl stickers and 100 leaflets. We feel this will be sufficient for a new band to start up within the music industry. The price of £450 includes all the printing and labour cost, but after we get more established we can start offering larger packs for a high price.

Radio Advertising

Using the radio as one of promotional methods was a very late idea that we had, and though it would have been a great way to promote our small business, unfortunetly we didnt have time to put it into our business plan or presesntation, but its something that we wanted to document as it could be useful in the future.

“Radio is three fifths as effective as TV, but only one seventh of the cost. So radio can be a much more cost-effective medium than television for advertising purposes, if it’s used correctly.”

Affordability means that radio advertising is often the preferred mainstream advertising medium of small businesses. People feel very loyal towards their favourite radio station which advertisers can look to exploit, as Radio Works’ Michael Charnley-Heaton says:

“Radio is the ideal medium for small businesses as local radio listeners have a very close relationship with their favourite station and advertisers can benefit from this.

  • The Radio Station – it almost goes without saying that listener numbers are the main determinant of the cost of advertising on a particular station. Therefore try to choose stations that have the highest concentration of your target audience rather than the most popular stations.
  • Length of the Ad – the standard length is 30 seconds, with 10 second ads being approximately half the price of 30 second ads.
  • Time of Day – early morning and late afternoon are the most desirable times so are the most expensive.
  • Length of the Campaign – longer campaigns are more expensive but cheaper on a per ad basis. In general it’s best not to advertise on the radio for less than 4 weeks, unless it’s a highly intensive campaign.
  • Campaign Frequency – radio advertising relies on repetition so don’t have your ads spread out thinly. If you can’t afford high frequency ads consider advertising one week on and one week off over a couple of months.
  • The Type of Advertising – radio stations are flexible with what advertising options they have. For example, you can often sponsor particular shows or features, or run a competition on air.

There will also be the cost of the creative. A general rule is that developing the ad should cost no more than 10% of your budget – around £250 for small stations and £2,000 for some of the most popular stations. These fees include script writing, actors to speak in the ad, music and sound effects. However, if you’d like a popular song it can cost up to £25,000 in licensing fees.

Customers - what local bands want from a design comapny

Hi,
My name is Rebecca Liggins and I'm a student at Leeds College of Art, I'm doing some researching into the West Yorkshire design industry for local bands and artists. Myself and a friend are hoping to set up a business to promote bands and artists and design any material that they may need, I'm interested in knowing what local bands are using at the moment. do you use any designers or businesses for your albums, posters, websites, tickets? or do you design these yourself? also if you were looking for a Graphic Designer what services would be most important for you e.g. being local, affordable, unique style.

I would really appreciate it if you could get back to me so that I can get some reliable research and hopefully set up a successful business for customers like yourself.

Thank you very much
Rebecca Liggins

Hi Rebecca,
We design them all but we have a pr company call Clearsilver in Leeds to help us get it down looking right.
As for a Graphic Designer then I think you have hit the nail on the head with all what you said being local, affordable, unique style.
Hope this helps

Hi Rebecca,
It's a good idea!
I think most local artists rely heavily on friends and friends of friends to help with artwork, promotion, flyer desgin, cd artwork etc.
I think there's quite a good community between musicians and artists and it's often mutually beneficial for an artist and musician to work together.
I think for a graphic designer the key things would be being local, being affordable and knowing the music scene quite well.
Also having a unique and unimitable style would be a massive bonus!!!
Good luck with it!
Cheers,
Ben

Hi.
I dont really have a live band and all my gig promo is currently sorted by the booking agency at that time I have no imput at this point in my career.
If i needed a graphic designer the things I would look for would be quality at an affordable and cost effective price and also some one with a flamboyant and unique style so my product stands out from the last.
Hope this is ok :-)

Alright Rebecca
We have always designed our own artwork for our recordings and flyer/posters. If we were to use someone it would have to be because a unique stlye, we'd have to be a fan of their work basically. Being local wouldn't be an issue as jpeg files can be zapped around all over. Price would be an issue too, cheaper the better obviously.
Good luck with your research.

Year of the man
hi rebecca, thanks for your interest in our band, currently we use posters already designed by people for promoters to display and advertise on the internet, mainly social networking sites, we do have certain artists we use again and again for other promotional design, such as t shirts, album artwork etc, please let us know if we can help you with anymore info
Year Of The Man

A day for heros
Hey Rebecca,
Sounds really good what you got in mind for the future so we'll be happy to help.
As a young band who have only been together for 2 years we have so far done all our design work ourselves and with a small group of friends. We are still working on a band logo and have designed merchandise through a website (www.spreadshirt.net) We used spreadshirt because of the simple nature and it is free to make clothes there however we as a band make no money from this.
For a new band, the main reason we haven't approached a business is because of funding ourselves. We don't feel we have enough money to promote ourselves fully with materials and on the internet. The most important service for us at the moment would be an affordable way of grabbing gig promoters attentions.
I hope that's kind of useful for you haha. Good luck with your research.

Hi Rebecca,
I have had other people do some graphic design for me.  The main thing I would be looking for would be someone who is innovative and can come up with the right design to match me and my music, then affordability.  Do you have any work I could have a look at?
Hannah
